As you guessed already i’m a huge gamer and i play a lot of different kind of games. I was all excited to play with my first real MMO since it was a complete new experience and it occur in a fantasy world which i adore.
It began with the closed beta of Word of Warcraft, i was happily selected to try before anyone else what i knew to be a hit to come. Indeed i was never ever disappointed with a Blizzard game.
I played it as an Hardcore for many years and stopped from time to time to take a break, usually a couple of months.
I definitely stopped in december last years because i really lost interested, it took too many times to play at a high level enough and i had other priorities.
Back at that time there was not so many mmo’s but now there’s so many i can’t even count them. I guess some studio saw how mmo could be juicy and started to use everything worthy as a theme to create a game.
Star Wars, LOTR, Warhammer, StarTrek ect… they all got their own but many more were created using original world even if fantasy world basics are often always found in them.
Without counting the large amount of free mmo rpg, i tried a few of them mainly because promotional graphics were appealing.
But it was always a deception, low resolution, poor visual, not so much content or a game half-free …
I tried many of them and some of them got an enormous potential like Warhammer but for me it goes to waste because the way they created this universe could have been way better put to use in another type of game.
I’m dreaming about a single player adventure game using Warhammer license and and it could have been masterpiece … if it wasn’t created as a mmo.
I know we are in a community era when everyone must be connected to his friends online whatever he’s doing / playing / watching. I really got tired of this because now every software, game platform must be connected online with a chat system, friends list, ignore list and so on …
Obviously a mmo is created to play online with other people and it’s created in a way you can’t achieve a lot of things without being helped by many people.
Myself i always tried to do a lot of things alone in a mmo which can look weird but i loved many of those games …. alone but it always ended in a sort of frustration, in those games great achievements are done in a guild.
A guild is like a company and every problem commonly met in a company are met in a guild. Since it’s a gathering they’re conflict and in my years of playing i’ve seen more than you can imagine.
Sometimes you just want to play without being in a middle of a big fight between members.
What really pisses me of is when i heard the next big Star Wars games from Bioware would be a mmorpg :/
As you may know they created the 2 first “Knight of the old republic” alias KOTOR who were one of the most enjoyable games i played.
I was deeply expecting some kind of Kotor 3 but once again it goes to waste.
Fortunately we have Mass Effects and Final Fantasy to play “alone” without being bothered by other people or without have to request the help of others.
So no i won’t play a mmo anymore and i hope good single player game will continue to be made in the future

I totally agree with you, multiplayer games are nice once in a while, but sometimes you just don’t want to deal with people and play something by yourself. Last night I spent about 5 hours playing Assassin’s Creed II, I’m almost at the end

I think in the future games boxes will have a “You can play this one alone !!!” writing just because it become singular lol
Sometimes i want to say, cut the crap i want to play … i miss the good old days when you just add to put the cardridge and press “start”
Nice post my first mmo experience would have to be Everquest for a few years then heard about WoW played that for a long time up until they released the tournament of champions patch. Lots of drama in my WoW career and lots of whiners but I suppose you find that anywhere you go sadly, as for now not really playing any mmo’s waiting on Star Wars now.

Lol yeah my WoW careers was … turbulent. So many people i’ve met, so many guilds i’ve joined. So many whining and complains, dumb folks and stupid kids.
I also remember a lot of bots and gold-sellers …
Yek no StarWars, i’m very mad at them for using SW name to do another mmo. I wanted a Kotor3 !!!
I love MMO’s ^^ but it gets boring after awhile, with all the repetitive quests and stuff =/ makes you wanna strangle someone >.< and yeah, like you I stopped mmo's completely =P

Yeah lol so many hours spent on doing the same thing over and over again. The problem with is i like to collect everything even when it’s completely useless.
I guess i was the perfect addicted gamer … but this period is definitively over.
Great post.
I remember my first MMO. Myth of Soma when I was 12. It was great. I got to trash talk and troll on people without any repercussions. Needless to say that got boring after a week.
Anyway, a few years later I went back as a more mature player. Damn I enjoyed that game. I played for 2 or 3 years working my way up to be the top weapon crafter. Spent some great times with my guild. But sadly the game started dying, and once I reached my goal I jumped ship.
Just in time for Guild Wars. I’m still playing Guild Wars and have been since release – although not as much as I used to. Guild Wars is awesome because it’s free to play and logging out for a week doesn’t make you “fall behind” everyone else. And you get AI partners to play with, so there’s no need to group with humans. I’ve done *almost* everything ingame with the AI, but I’ve also done everything with 2 players that I met. We’re just waiting on GW2 now before blasting our way through it.
I’m in a rut with computer games at the moment I must say. Single player games are boring and generic; and MMOs are all WoW clones. Although my PSP is offering some fun with Queen’s Blade Spiral Chaos. Left4Dead 2 was fun for a month. Probably the longest I’ve played a game since GW…
Long comment is long

I tried GW actually but don’t really know, didn’t get passionate in the end. I stopped playing rapidly.
Back then i don’t recall having the possibility to call for AI partners, maybe i missed this possibility or it was implemented later. Too bad because since i love to do quest and stuffs alone …
They’re great games on computer but i admit they tend to do corrupt some basic fundamental of some kind of games.
Lets’ say a Shooter games for instance, why the hell put dialogues, basic quests and some “reality” parameters … who cares i just want to kill a lot of bad guys without thinking.
Trying to “RPG” shooter is a federal crime, definitely.
I am in total agreement with you. The social politics involved with MMOs just goes to show that no matter what interface, what facade, human nature always finds a way to come through and mess it all up.
My first “MMO” was completely text based, using an engine called ROM 2.4, termed “MUD” or Multi-User-Dimension. Look it up. It’s quite interesting to read its history.
I was so hooked back then (and this was before cellphones), that my circle of arcade gamer friends had to come online to check if I was still alive.
Eventually, I lost interest after the sever I was on went kaput, wandering aimlessly across other MUDs, but not quite fitting into their established social world (which surprised me how different they were, even though they all ran on the same ROM engine). It goes to show how different servers have different attitudes, just like different forums.
I got tired of the whole online thing eventually – I liked the Korean MMOs like Lineage II, and Ragnarok Online, but hated how people behaved on it. “If only I could play this offline.”
About 3 years ago, I checked out L2J, which is a server utility that allowed you to run a local copy of Lineage II. I spent HOURS figuring out how to set it up, and was eventually able to play it. Even though I basically played alone in a massive world, it was far more fun and atmospheric. I may eventually setup another local server again and play, but no time. lol.
KOTOR was awesome. I can’t believe I put nearly 100 hours into it. Such an amazing game. Never got into KOTOR2 though, since it was done by another company, it lacked the charm of KOTOR1, and had some design issues.
Nowadays, I play strictly offline, in fear of sinking way too many hours into these social games. It takes so much time to setup quests, wait for people to join, only to have others leave the group, etc etc. Back in the old days, setup and go was so much easier than it is now.

I suppose i’m still young enough for not ever heard about text based “MMO” lol
Cool i’m not an old girl yet. I guess it used the telephone line with a dial-in number or something similar ? Must have cost a lot!
It’s interesting how quickly a server creates it’s own community with it’s famous players, guilds, events and it’s own language and code.
A lot a players feel proud to be a part of this community and maybe it’s a good motivation for them to continue playing. Myself i don’t care that much about how famous i am, as long as i enjoy playing …
Tried Lineage II as well, loved the graphics (like all Korean games actually) but it was so crowded with bots … i remember on the starting area being almost the most real human playing while being surrounded with a lot of other characters. But nobody actually answered me when i tried to talk lol
I also wanted to create personal server to play without the crap
but it always failed especially with WoW, ok it start but the generated world was incomplete and monsters weren’t moving and only use a basic attack
Yeah Kotor … i also put 100hours into it since i did it twice. Kotor 2 was still cool to play as it used the same gameplay but the story wasn’t deep and thrilling enough, it stays a good memory though.
MMORPGs, huh?
Well… I’m in that genre very, very strict. I’m not a fan of RPG too.
But there is an MMORPG that I actually loving. It’s called Guild Wars. You pay one time and then you have no monthly coast anymore! The best system ever.
Why I like it? Because it has an story. 4 different Storylinies, 3 continents with each Add-On. I also like the build system. You don’t have so many skills that overhelming your monitor. You can “wear” 6 technics when you are not outside of a town. So you need to prepare for each mission/quest new. But you can change it how you like. And there some special magic/attacks that you have to collect from boss fights. I like those because they are very powerfull, called Elite Skill.
But not every Boss haves the right skill. For example an healing boss will have no warrior elite skill.
And the best part is: You have to find a group for the missions! You can not go out there alone and do a mission all by yourself. At least you can use bots that are cool, or at least heros that you can set them up with weapons, tactics and skills (and elite skills too if you have the skill too). But I alway preferred to play with other players since the chance is higher to win and it makes more fun then alone.
I would say, it’s an MMORPG that you are really bound together. And you don’t need to play that much to be good. You can only reach lvl 20. But you can implant your armony some specials to power up your attack, healing or co. And I like that. You don’t have to power up like dump.
And when you follow the storyline, you will level up normaly.
I tested WoW too, but play it until i reached lvl 32 with my Warrior. It was boring. No one that actually plays with you. No beginner line. The only thing that you are doing is to do quests and don’t see anything from the story.
So I’m a big fan of Guild Wars. I have all Add-Ons and some nice chars like an healer, necro, and many more. Too sad that not much gamers playing it now. But I can understand it: Guild Wars 2 will be come out soon ^^

When i read you, i really wonder why GW wasn’t a revelation to me … it looks very fun on paper. But i won’t test the second, no way i’ll risk to fall into a game like that again. Nooooo sir
Well my best character on WoW was a warrior and … well i only started to feel the fun playing it around level 35. Before that you’re weak as hell lol
It’s very fun at high level though but i understand why you leave. My first character was a priest and it was fun to me since the very beginning, everybody need you
Loved the first KotOR, a great game.
Only mmoropg I’ve really played for a long time was the Japanese version of “Yogurting”, my first mmorpg and had a great time on it for nearly two years.
Alas now with IP blocks and no new content since the original game in Korea -where all development was done- has long shut down, the game is as good as dead. The community of friends in our group we had moved on, the younger players went on to college or work, older players changed jobs, less compatible hours, etc…
Still I look back with fondness on “Yogurting”, it was such a cute and light-hearted game. It spurred me on to go take Japanese lessons.
Reminds me I totally forgot about the new “Star Trek” mmorpg, kind of want to try it but I know it’s a bad idea because if I get hooked it’ll suck away all my free time.
A disadvantage about mmorpg’s is the need to invest so much time in them if you want to level up and be good. If you take time out for other things you general fall behind, and in many games like WoW there can be such strict rules enforced by high level players or guilds that it becomes constricting… where’s the fun then?
Another good read about how mmorpg’s get people hooked is this article:
http://www.cracked.com/article_18461_5-creepy-ways-video-games-are-trying-to-get-you-addicted.html
If you read past and between the phrases, you realize mmorpg psychology is fearsome.
Like radiant said, a disadvantage of may mmorpg’s is that they’ll reflect the general Internet trend too and have many unsociable and ill-mannered people in them, which is a shame.
Smithy´s last blog ..New K-ON!! character Miura Akane?
That was a problem to me yes, indeed the way i have fun in a mmo must be at a high level. What i loved was the challenge and epic fights with epic loots.
But a high level guild got some rules that everybody must follow to advance. It may looks fearsome but if you don’t set those rules your guild can be considered as disabled already.
For instance when i saw announcement like “Join my guild, all fun, no strict rules ect…” i instentanely knew this guild would not go very far in the game.
My best period of gaming it’s when i was in one of the top guild on the server … epic period. Never found this atmosphere again.
But now i want to play a lot of games, watching a lot of animes and don’t focus only on a single mmo. What a waste when you look at it.
Right, you’ve nailed it. Even before WoW MMOs were becoming unprecedentedly huge, and radiant there gives good insight into how things were even long before that. For me it was Maplestory, the most anal, time consuming, ultimately pointless game ever. EVER. I knew when I was playing too, but I continued really because of the player base. And boy, were guilds the epitome of drama.
A fledgling sociologist back in the day would’ve never guessed a multiplayer game across digital channels would evolve into something so… broken. I guess this would be called ‘MMO anomie’.
And then every new retail MMO now is a knockoff of WoW trying to gain just a fraction of the popularity…
I’d prefer single player games now, but I still won’t condemn MMOs entirely. On a hopeful note, if a game is young and the player base decent, you can play a good game with some nice people.
I remember KOTOR… And that back then, my computer was too crappy to run it x.x
Lol “anal” ha ha, there’s a lot of pointless and useless actions in any mmo when you look at it. Well okay maybe yours was completely composed of this lol
And yeah the guild drama …. i’ve seen a lot and most of the time it’s personal issue between guild members that stopped me to play for a while.
I think mmo must be reinvented in a way because it’s too perverted now and it costs a lot when you look at it. And it’s nearly impossible to play 2 mmo at the same time.
Blasting aliens alone… no headache lol
From my point of view, that’s sometimes cool to meet and play with other humans. But MMOs are time-consuming, fully agree.
As you already know I am a big arcade aficionado.
Arcades are really close too the MMO concept: Meet players, create a strong community and the “world” continues to run without you
Real arcade games on real arcade cabinets rock. No exception.
Cabinets are room expensive
But yeah it’s fun as long as it’s not combat games, not my taste.
Arcade are even more costly than mmo’s lol
Ghouls’n ghost, that ‘s the way…
well it’s been few years since my last MMORPG ^^;;; I am not playing that kind of game anymore just fighting and shooter I admit I can keep Up and i am suck at that Kind of game >_<
It’s better like this for you i guess
There’s nothing wrong to play only fighting and shooters games.
What’s important in games is that you enjoy your game periods whatever the kind.
ive lost track of all the mmorpg out today, i used to play way too much of it in my high school and college days XD i was a huge soloist too been through the guild dramas Lol got pulled in with the free Knight Online both malaysian and US servers, then jumped to Guild Wars and finally Final Fantasy XII. tested some small korean ones in between too i still love them for the fact that they take place in massive lands you can roam freely *depending on your lvl* lol
now a days i prefer a good single player game as well. i dont have a ps3 or xbox360 T_T the last pc game i played was Assassins Creed, i like quick action ^^ but i want to try out mass effect and KOTOR sometime. moar PC games for me pls

Of course it was easier to play a lot when you’re a student. Lots of free time
I wonder how many i’ve tried so far … must be around 15 i guess.
My favorite platform for gaming remain the computer even if sometimes protection system are very annoying :/
You should definitely try the two Mass Effects. You can also try Kotor but it’s an old games and graphics may be a bit ugly compared to what you can see today.
But it’s worth trying !
Hmm… I guess most game company is moving to MMO or console to reduce/counter piracy.
On PC, basically, revenue is like … zzz… due to all the cracks and hacks out there. For example, AC2 got cracked in a day *boink*. So, I guess all these depends on the company’s roadmap.
Just some thoughts.
Well even if console may be more difficult to hack, it’s still hacked
It’s a complete other debate but for me affordable price and good games without annoying protection system are the best ways to counter piracy.
Saw a video on a MMO called all points bulletin! looks awesome GTA open world style cops vs gangs that looks really nice ! i for see nerfs to cars running people over lol..

Anyway before start to play to FF XIII I must finish Bayonneta.

Bayonneta is still a big pain in my earth… why they released a better version on xbox seriously. It’s a conspiracy !
FFXII is really nice and i’m happy to play a FF again, my last one was FF8. Been a while.
I never really played to MMO. I prefer solo RPG like Bladur’s gate, Neverwinter Nights or, more recently, the excellent Dragon Age. It is hard to stop this sort of game when I have began. And finally, that’s more social than anything. The aim is to play but also meet people and discuss with them. When I play, I prefer do it alone (or with real friend).

Oh yeah Baldur’s gate, played a lot with this one but never finished it lol
It’s a damn long game that’s for sure.
What’s fun is to play with a friend physically in the same room, more fun that way
I’m still pretty much an MMO-virgin lol.
I’ve seen the damage that they can cause, as some of my friends had previously fallen into the traps many times before.
I’m still wary of the whole thing and treat it as taboo, but I really do want to get into it at least once in my life.
Still waiting for the one game that will pique my interest enough for me to succumb to temptation.

Indeed if you saw friends having problems because of their too much playings … it’s like a vaccine lol
But still it’s an experience and most of the time it was a good experience to me. On the other side retrospectively i realize i missed others games just because mmo took too much time on me.
Don’t know ^^ Try them at you own risk lol
Ya, I’ve had my fair share of MMO’s in the past. I haven’t played much at all due to school. Although, I was selected to be a beta tester for Starcraft 2 so I’ve been playing that ever now and then. The latest game purchase was God of War III and the next one will be Bayonetta. If I am to to play a MMO again it would only be because I was selected as a beta tester for FF XIV lol.
I added you to my blogroll, mind adding me back? Thanks ^^.

I think I tried it for a week and haven’t ever played MMORPGs since.

Sorry to be vulgar but you see my point
